Women in my family

Here's our statistic of the day: women still earn less than men for equal work at every education level in the U.S. And a recent report from the census bureau shows that while receiving advanced degrees pays off for women, it's still not as financially beneficial as it is for men. Men's overall median monthly earnings are $3,750, while women come in at $2,917.

So next time you think (or hear): "oh, those feminists need to get over it now, women's rights are so nineteenth century"... that's flat-out not true. This number is important because so many people honest-to-goodness think the income gap is a thing of the past. It's not.

And now: the first woman - or rather women - I'd like to introduce you to are my aunts. You've already heard about them plenty, so I won't elaborate, but they've taught me a lot about being faithful. Faithful to God, faithful to your responsibilities, faithful to friends, faithful to famiglia.

They were a source of inspiration to me growing up, and I know they've been a role model for many other people; they've touched so many lives as music teachers, as participants in their community and family, as teachers and leaders in the church.

So please, check out the interview I did with them over this summer. It's a good read, and you'll see a little bit of what I mean. They're pretty cool :)

How about you? What have women in your family given or taught you? Do share, I'd love to hear your stories!

Sympathy

My grandfather writes regularly and it's always a treat to get his letters. It's especially fun to hear his stories, like this one:

"I saw a show on the tele (that's what we called the TV when it first came out) that brought back to me the memory of when I found a large manta ray. It had washed up on the beach and could not get back into the water. We hired a rickshaw driver ..."

At this point I'm thinking "aw, how sweet! They got it back into the water and it lived happily ever after," and then I read the next line:

"...to fit it into his vehicle and take it to the local restaurant where they would put it on the menu."

Always a practical mind!

Blog book?

I just read this post over at "Or so she says" and I'm pretty excited about it.

She essentially explains how she made her blog into a photo book using blurb, and I can't wait to get started. I've always wondered how I could preserve everything I've done with this blog, because it really has been the most consistent of my records. (My journal doesn't get much attention...) While I do think I need to write more in my journal, I love using this blog as a record of events and coming and goings, and some of my thoughts on life. I think that a journal could be more useful as a recording of spiritual impressions and revelation, and so I guess this is one of my goals for this year: I'm in a D&C religion class and all of this talk of revelation has really got me thinking. I also have a theory on Joseph Smith, but I'll talk about that later because right now I have to get to class!

And thanks for reading, for those of you who do. It's nice to not be a voice in the wilderness too often.

I also need to get in on this...

If I were filthy rich

This would be my husband's Christmas present.

And a fancy matching power pen.

Oh, and my kids will get this:

My favorite childhood books. There was a whole series about this little girl. Also note her fabulous sense of style!
